Canada started its defence at the Canadian Human Rights tribunal by asking for the hearings to be adjourned.

The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society along with the Assembly of First Nations allege that Canada discriminates against on-reserve children by paying less for child welfare agencies than what provinces pay off reserve.

Justice lawyers started the day by asking for an adjournment. The panel of three commissioners denied the request. Canada also cut its witness list from 18 down to five.

APTN’s Annette Francis has been following the tribunal.
