MANITOULIN—Patrick Madahbee, the Grand Council Chief of the Anishinabek Nation, has expressed his group’s concerns with the Assembly of First Nation’s (AFN) relationship with the federal Conservative government in regards to AFN’s protocols and mandates.

In a letter to National Chief Shawn Atleo, Cheif Madahbee writes, “I’m writing today because of concerns I have with the Assembly of First Nation’s (AFN) relationship with the federal Conservative government. In addition, I must also raise a number of issues surrounding AFN’s protocols and mandates.”

“The recent joint announcement for First Nations Control Over First Nation Education Act (FNCFNEA) is of particular interest to Anishinabek First Nations and citizens. I imagine you have heard much of the criticism from some First Nations by now and I do not want to repeat what may have already been said. However, in my role as the Grand Council Chief for the Anishinabek Nation, I am obligated to go on record and inform you of the concerns that are coming from Anishinabek First Nations as well as my own concerns,” wrote Chief Madahbee.....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Water usage by fracking operations challenged in B.C. Supreme Court

— filed under: Karen Campbell, Morgan Blakley, B.C., Fracking

Mar 14, 2014 11:53 AM

Mar 17, 2014 -

VANCOUVER — A lawsuit targeting water withdrawals by oil and gas companies in north-eastern British Columbia will be heard by the B.C. Supreme Court today.

Ecojustice lawyers, representing Sierra Club BC and the Wilderness Committee, will argue that the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission’s practice of repeatedly granting short-term water approvals to oil and gas companies is unlawful.

“If companies want long-term access to B.C.’s fresh water then they need to apply for a full water licence, not rely on repeated short-term approvals,” said Morgan Blakley, Ecojustice staff lawyer. “Our clients’ position is that the Commission is unlawfully allowing oil and gas companies to drain huge quantities of fresh water from lakes, rivers and streams in north-east B.C. by approving hundreds of repetitive short-term approvals.”.....

Canada started its defence at the Canadian Human Rights tribunal by asking for the hearings to be adjourned.

The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society along with the Assembly of First Nations allege that Canada discriminates against on-reserve children by paying less for child welfare agencies than what provinces pay off reserve.

Justice lawyers started the day by asking for an adjournment. The panel of three commissioners denied the request. Canada also cut its witness list from 18 down to five.

APTN’s Annette Francis has been following the tribunal.

Press release: VIA – Rising Tide - Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories

VANCOUVER, COAST SALISH TERRITORIES – This morning, activists with Rising Tide-Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories dropped a banner reading “Coal, Oil, Gas: None Shall Pass” outside Port Metro Vancouver’s head office at Canada Place, in opposition to the proposed Fraser Surrey Docks coal terminal.

“This coal export project is part of a push to make BC a gateway to profits for the fossil fuel industry. While a coal terminal may be on the radar now, we are facing a juggernaut of fossil fuel development that puts our climate, water and health at risk for the sake of corporate profit and Christy Clark and Stephen Harper are acting as the industry’s top salespeople,” said Chandra Tung of Rising Tide.....
