Mi'kmaq women face off against police in October 2013 while protesting fracking on the territory of Elsipogtog First Nation.

First Nations' Railroad Blockade in Marysville, Ontario, Forces VIA Rail to Stop Trains

MONTREAL, March 8, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - A railroad blockade in the Napanee area between Belleville and Kingston affects the movement of VIA Rail (www.viarail.ca) trains on the Toronto - Montréal and Toronto - Ottawa routes, in both directions. Trains between Ottawa and Montréal are operating according to the regular schedule for now.

Every effort is being made to bring passengers with itineraries passing through the site of the blockade to destination. VIA Rail's foremost priority is to ensure that customers reach their destinations as comfortably and safely as possible. This situation will cause substantial expenses and force our employees to work long hours.

VIA Rail appreciates the understanding of its passengers. Customers with reservations choosing not to travel can receive a full refund. Those wishing to exchange their ticket for a later date may do so at no additional charge. Customers wishing to cancel or change their date of travel, may do so at no additional charge by calling 1 888 VIA-RAIL (1 888 842-7245) or 1 800 268-9503 (hearing impaired), up to 24 hours prior to their scheduled departure. For updated information, follow us on Twitter @VIA rail and on Facebook.

Delays can be expected. Service recovery measures such as late train travel credits or travel credits for bus substitutions will not be offered for affected trains. Extra charges paid for Business Class tickets will be reimbursed in the case of a bus substitution.

APTN National News
OTTAWA–The Conservative MPs on the House of Commons special committee on violence against Indigenous women refused to add calls for a public inquiry as part of the main recommendations in the committee’s report tabled Friday in Parliament.

The committee’s main recommendations, which were essentially those of Conservative MPs on the committee, generally reflected the Harper government’s current policy on the issue.

There are an estimated 800 murdered and missing Indigenous women across the country.....

An unprecedented court injunction has barred the Department of Fisheries and Oceans from opening a commercial fishery off Vancouver Island after a judge concluded DFO was “fudging the numbers” and that the federal minister declared it open against her own bureaucrats’ advice.

The Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations, whose herring-roe fishery has been closed since 2006, went to court last month seeking the injunction.....

APTN National News
Nearly three years ago Iqaluit woke up to a horrific tragedy.

A triple murder suicide rocked the territorial capital.

A woman and her two young children were discovered dead in their house an hour earlier.

The father had been found dead from a self inflicted gun shot wound.

The news shocked residents.

But now APTN has discovered the tragedy might have been avoided.

APTN’s Nigel Newlove explains.

It seems illogical to use the most populated stretch of Canada as a transport corridor for toxic and highly volatile fuels, but the National Energy Board of Canada has approved Enbridge’s request to do just that. They have just authorized the company to flow tar sands dilbit and U.S. Bakken crude through their 38 year old Line 9 pipeline. The 830km long pipe runs through the largest cities in Canada and crosses hundreds of waterways throughout Ontario and Quebec, including every single tributary that drains into Lake Ontario.

The NEB has ruled that the project serves Canadians’ public interest, leaving little doubt as to which Canadians they are advocating for. Certainly, it isn’t the first Canadians, as the NEB’s approval arrives in spite of testimonies from First Nations along the line that the federal government has never consulted with them about this project.....

The Hupacasath First Nation may not have succeeded the first time around, but its fight to keep the federal government from ratifying the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Act (FIPPA) is heating up again.

The tiny Vancouver Island nation has filed an appeal with the Federal Court of Appeals and expects the Crown to file by March 17.....

TYENDINAGA MOHAWK TERRITORY–Mohawks from Tyendinaga and Akwesanse forced the shutdown of CN Rail’s track between Toronto and Ottawa for a little over three hours Saturday in response to the Harper government’s refusal to call a public inquiry to examine the high number of murdered and missing Indigenous women across the country.

The action also coincided with International Women’s Day.

The OPP arrested four people, including prominent Mohawk activist Shawn Brant and John Fox, whose daughter Cheyenne Fox was killed last April after she fell from the 24th floor of a Toronto condo.

The rail track shutdown ended after the Mohawks agreed to pull back in exchange for the release ....

Debra Foxcroft, Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council President.

Port Alberni —

On Saturday March 8, International Women’s Day, the theme for this year in 2014 is “Equality for Women is Progress for all.” Can we all to take a moment to reflect back and honor our women who have inspired us, empowered us or challenged us?

It’s a time for us to reflect on the progress we have made individually, within our families and communities. It’s a call for change and celebration of acts of courage and determination by extraordinary and ordinary women.

And let us not forget the women we have lost in our lives. To them we send thanks and appreciation in our prayers and loving, positive thoughts....
